Fire prevention work set for Vernon park

Mar 18, 2024 | 5:00 AM

A fire prevention project is expected to kick-off in Vernon’s Polson Park this week.

Starting as early as Monday, March 18, crews will begin reducing fire fuels along the south-east boundary of the downtown park (see map below).

The work includes thinning the trees, limbing-up of ladder fuels and removing excess vegetation.

“By reducing fuels in this area of Polson Park, we reduce the threat to public spaces and critical infrastructure, such as Vernon Jubilee Hospital,” Wes Brassard, FireSmart Coordinator, said. “Building a fire resilient community takes a community effort. We all have a part to play. These types of projects can reduce the severity and intensity of a fire.”

City staff will be working with Rider Ventures on the project which is expected to take a couple of weeks.

The park will remain open and park visitors are asked to adhere to any posted signs or instructions.

The city will use funds from the BC Community Resiliency Investment Program to conduct the work.
