Volunteers needed for Alzheimer Society in Vernon

Mar 1, 2024 | 7:00 AM

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is seeking more people in Vernon to get involved.

The organization said 85,000 British Columbians are living with dementia, and that number is expected to rise to nearly 134,000 by 2030.

The society aims to expand its services in order to keep up with the rising rates of dementia, and is calling for people in Vernon to sign up as volunteers.

“Being part of a support group allows me to stay grounded and empathize with what my sister-in-law is going through,” said Annemarie Travers, who has been a volunteer with the society since her sister-in-law was diagnosed with dementia six years ago.

“It’s an opportunity to use my strengths and offer support to those who need it most.”

The Alzheimer’s Society said it requires volunteers for a range of positions, adding 65 per cent of not-for-profits in B.C. were experiencing shortages of new volunteers, and half of them were struggling with volunteer retention.

“By volunteering with us, you have the power to bring joy, comfort and support to people affected by dementia,” Andrea Campbell, Support & Education Coordinator at the Society’s North & Central Okanagan resource center, said.

“Our volunteers have the opportunity to show people affected by dementia they’re not alone.”

People wishing to get involved with the Society can learn more about the volunteer opportunities at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. website.
