Restoration project proposed for BX Ranchlands

A local organization is looking for support to undertake restoration work of Hog’s Gulch.

In a report to the Regional District of North Okanagan’s Board of Directors, the North Okanagan Naturalists’ Club said it wishes to restore a 700 metre section of the creek within the BX Ranchlands property to “increase ecosystem riparian, wetland and aquatic resiliency.”

The project would include widening and re-contouring the creek and creek banks; realigning the creek to a more natural configuration; installing ponding areas to create wetland habitat in order to increase water quality and recharge groundwater; and planting trees and shrubs to restore the riparian area.

The presentation noted the work would be beneficial as it would increase water holding capacity during extreme rain events and spring runoff; improve water filtering leading to better water quality and drought mitigation; support diverse plant species and promote biodiversity; increase pollinator habitat opportunities; provide shade for animals and people using the walking trail; provide educational opportunities at the Ranchlands; and enhance the property for farmers operating the agricultural park.

In order to pay for the restoration work, the Naturalists’ Club will be applying for a grant of up to $30,000 from the Okanagan Basin Water Board’s water conservation and quality improvement fund.

The presentation will be given to the RDNO Board of Directors during the meeting Wednesday, Feb. 21, asking for the board’s support in the Naturalists’ Club’s application.

It’s recommended that the RDNO board support the proposed project and direct staff to send a letter to the OBWB.

The deadline to apply for the water board grant is Friday, Feb. 23.
