Hold and secure lifted at Vernon school after incident investigated

Feb 15, 2024 | 2:17 PM

A hold and secure was put into effect at Vernon Secondary School (VSS) this afternoon, but it’s now been lifted.

School District 22 said in an email to family members, the security measure was taken as a precaution while police investigated an incident.

“The procedure is used when there is cause for concern in the community,” SD22 said in the email. “Within a short period of time, the RCMP advised that the situation was under control and the additional precautionary measure of hold and secure was lifted.”

The district said there was no direct threat to the safety and wellbeing of the students.

“If your child has questions, please reassure them that the RCMP and the school worked together to deal with the situation and everyone was safe at all times,” the email stated. “We are proud to say all our students and staff responded appropriately and implemented the Hold and Secure in an orderly fashion.”

SD22 Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins said it was a brief hold and secure at the school on 15th Street.

“The youth involved has now been arrested and will appear in court tomorrow, and that’s all I can say,” Perkins told Vernon Matters.

Perkins was not able to say anything about what kind of incident took place.

Vernon Matters has reached out to Vernon North Okanagan RCMP for more details.
