Nearly $467K in Support

Falkland Stampede ropes-in renovation funds

Jan 19, 2024 | 11:20 AM

The site of the annual Falkland Stampede will be getting nearly half a million dollars for some much needed upgrades.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District Board of Directors unanimously approved funding for repairs and upgrades to the Stampede grounds at the regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 18.

The CSRD will provide up to $466,543 for the work, which includes removing old wiring and installing new electrical services; replacing the wood fence along Highway 97; upgrading and replacing old railings on the grandstands and announcer’s booth; replacing the roof over the grandstand that was previously removed; and decommissioning a concession booth while building another one that can be used by local groups for fundraising purposes once certified by Interior Health.

“It’s literally the heartbeat to Falkland and the regional area,” Electoral Area D Director Dean Trumbley stated during the board discussion.

“If some of these things are not corrected, it could potentially shut down the grounds and kill the rodeo.”

The financial aid will be provided through the Strategic Priorities Community Works Fund.

The Falkland and District Community Association will be awarded the funds for the work and be in charge of overseeing the upgrades and repairs. The association has also committed $100,000 of in-kind labour and support for the project.

Work on the upgrades is expected to begin as soon as possible so the grounds could be fully upgraded and ready for public use in time for the 104th Falkland Stampede, scheduled for May 18-20, 2024.
