Highway through Kicking Horse Canyon fully open

Travellers heading between B.C. and Alberta can fully access Highway 1 near Golden.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure stated that Phase 4 of the project to make the Trans-Canada Highway through Kicking Horse Canyon safer and wider has resulted in the new westbound lanes opening.

As of Thursday, Nov. 30, all four lanes of the divided highway were open for use.

The province said construction would pause for the winter, resuming in the spring to complete the final piece of the project involving landscaping, wildlife fencing, and final paving and line painting. That work may require some minor lane closures and delays.

The speed limit through the Kicking Horse Canyon section of Highway 1 will remain at 80 km/h through the winter. Once the final work is completed in the spring the speed limit will increase to 100 km/h.
