Uber Eats rolls out in Vernon

Nov 16, 2023 | 12:35 PM

Vernon residents wanting delivery of food, groceries and more, now have a new option.

As of Thursday, Nov. 16, Uber Eats began operating in the city.

“Starting [Thursday], residents and visitors in Vernon can order delivery from their favourite restaurants, along with their everyday essentials,” Keerthana Rang, a spokesperson for Uber Eats Canada, told Vernon Matters.

“Residents and visitors in Vernon will start seeing grocery stores, pet supply shops, alcohol stores and more on Uber Eats. It starts [Thursday], but we’ll have more restaurants and merchants on the platform as days go on.”

Rang confirmed “most of Coldstream” was included in the Vernon operations catchment area, but other communities including Spallumcheen and Lumby were not.

A cursory look at the app showed a handful of restaurants and businesses signed on, and Rang said they had enough drivers ahead of starting the operations in Vernon.

“Before we launch in any new city, what we do is we put a call out for delivery people so we can make sure the magical experience people have when they use Uber Eats, they have it from day one so they can get their deliveries in a reasonable time,” Rang said.

“We put a call out a couple weeks ago and we’ve been able to get a good number of delivery people on the platform.”

Uber Eats is not the only delivery service available in Vernon, but Rang said the competition is not be a concern.

“We know there are many delivery alternatives out there in Vernon and other cities that we’re expanding to and we think that’s healthy,” Rang remarked.

“Local restaurants are really at the heart of any community so it’s important they have the choice to pick a delivery platform that works for them.”

She added having Uber Eats in Vernon was not necessarily a precursor to bringing Uber ride services into town, though dshe id add they are always looking at expansion opportunities.

Vernon is one of 50 Canadian cities and 10 B.C. communities that Uber Eats is expanding into this fall and winter. Penticton was the only other Okanagan community included in the expansion, with the service launching there on Nov. 16 as well.
