Scoreboard at Greater Vernon Athletics Park up for consideration

Oct 31, 2023 | 11:15 AM

Teams and spectators at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park could be able to better track games by next year.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee (GVAC) will consider a request to install a scoreboard at the sports facility next to Okanagan College, at a total cost of $180,000.

The Vernon and District Minor Football Association originally planned to collect $90,000 for the purchase and installation of the scoreboard, which is equivalent to half the costs required, however their grant applications and fundraising were unsuccessful.

A Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) staff report to GVAC stated the project could be fully funded as the capital budget still had the required $180,000.

To accomodate that, it’s recommended that $90,000 be reallocated from general revenue and $90,000 of operating reserve funds be used by deferring the Greater Vernon Athletics Park goalpost repair project and using savings from the 2023 capital projects, including the Okanagan Rail Trail rock scaling and assessment project.

It’s recommended the 2023 financial plan be amended to account for the scoreboard project, rather than deal with possible funding options within the 2024 capital budget process. This would allow the scoreboard to be ordered in 2023 and installed at an earlier time than if approved in the 2024 budget.

“If approved by the [RDNO] board, purchase orders will be issued in 2023 with a target installation date of Spring 2024,” Andy Affleck, manager of parks and recreation, said in the report.

GVAC will discuss the request at its meeting Wednesday, Nov. 1.
