Two Hour Closure Oct. 30

Temporary closure to stabilize slope at Highway 97 rock slide

Oct 30, 2023 | 10:41 AM

The highway between Peachland and Summerland will be temporarily closed for work to stabilize the slope at the location of the Highway 97 rock slide.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said the highway would be closed in both directions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, as blasting operations is undertaken.

Blasting began on Oct. 24 and to date about 250 cubic metres of slide material has been removed from the site.

Blasting operations are expected to continue through November, and will require further closures that will be announced closer to the time of the work.

Blasting must take place during daylight hours for worker safety purposes, but the province said work would be done to minimize traffic disruptions.

Approximately 950 cubic metres of slide material from the August 28 rockslide remain on the scene and need to be cleared.

After that material is removed, stabilization operations that include the installation of bolts and rock anchors would be conducted through the winter months.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on the highway while the work is done in the winter. Detours on Trout Main and the 201 Forest Service Roads will also remain open, though the province warns drivers using those routes to be prepared with good winter tires, food, water, fuel and other emergency items.
