Solar eclipse on Saturday

Oct 13, 2023 | 1:00 PM

A rare annular solar eclipse will occur Saturday over parts of British Columbia.

The eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, treating viewers to a bright halo surrounding the black blot of the moon.

In some areas, it will look like a ring of fire.

The event in the Vernon-Kelowna area is expected to begin at 8:10 a.m. Pacific time Saturday, Oct. 13, peaking at 9:22 a.m. and ending at 10:41 in the morning.

Environment Canada is forecasting mainly cloudy skies for Saturday with a 30 percent chance of morning showers which could block people from seeing the eclipse.

The next solar eclipse is set for April 8, 2024 — viewable in Central and Eastern Canada.
