Winter Tires

Winter tire regulations begin Oct. 1 in B.C.

Oct 1, 2023 | 7:00 AM

Drivers who are planning to travel on high mountain highways in B.C. should remember to look at their calendars.

RCMP are reminding motorists that winter tires are required for both the Coquihalla and Okanagan Connector, and other highways, like Highway 97, starting today (October 1).

For cars, that includes tires with the M&S marking or the mountain with snowflake.

The requirement will remain in place until April 30. Certain highways that do not go through mountain passes, such as Highways 97, 6 and 33 will see the requirement end on March 31.

While snow may not yet have fallen in valley bottoms, it is not uncommon for snow to hit higher routes much sooner.

Drivers whose vehicles are not equipped with the proper snow tires risk a $121 fine and a tow.
