Wildfire Update

No growth at Glen Lake wildfire overnight, structure protection ramping up

Sep 21, 2023 | 12:15 PM

The Glen Lake wildfire west of Peachland has not grown thanks to the cooler overnight temperatures.

Central Okanagan Emergency Operations (COEO) said the cooler weather allowed crews to install additional structural protection resources like sprinklers around homes in the area, and people in the area could see more personnel and equipment in neighbourhoods Thursday as structure protection efforts continue. Both the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) and Peachland Fire and Rescue were working together on that task.

The COEO said no new evacuation orders or alerts were expected to be issued Thursday, though if weather conditions change and fire activity increases then new orders may be issued. Residents are encouraged to stay informed in case they need to vacate their properties on short notice.

As of Thursday there were eight recreational properties on Glen Lake Forest Service Road under evacuation orders, and the alert remained in place for all areas within the Regional District of Central Okanagan south of the Brenda Mine site, southwest of Highway 97C (Okanagan Corridor), and west of Highway 97. The alert did not include Peachland Beach Avenue neighbourhoods or the downtown area.

The BCWS also had planned to conduct small hand-ignitions Thursday on the northeast flank of the Glen Lake wildfire to remove unburnt fuel and secure the control lines for containment.

At last update, the BCWS had two initial attack crews, a heavy equipment strike team, and an incident management team assigned to the blaze.

The Glen Lake wildfire was an estimated 1,116 hectares in size at last update, burning about 6 km’s west of Peachland, and was still classified as “Out of Control.”

It’s believed the fire was human caused.
