Find out how to make a difference at Vernon Volunteer Fair

Sep 9, 2023 | 2:30 PM

People looking to get involved with community groups and non-profits will be able to learn more at the Vernon Volunteer Fair later this month.

Approximately 30 non-profit groups and seniors housing providers will be on site with booths and information for the fair at the Schubert Centre between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.

“The Vernon Volunteer Fair is a fantastic way to match volunteers who are wanting to make an difference with organizations that make our community a great place to live,” Lee Brinkman, event organizer for NexusBC Community Resource Centre, said in a news release.

“Many organizations are still resurrecting pre-pandemic programming, and have struggled to build back their volunteer support. If there is ever a time to volunteer, it is now.”

There are many volunteering opportunities in Vernon, including fostering a love for reading in children through the North Okanagan Literacy Society, supporting programs around the world with food and medical aid through the Gleaners, providing counseling through the Family Resource Centre, working outdoors as an ambassador on the Rail Trail or a tour guide for the Allan Brooks Nature Centre, or helping people achieve their dreams by becoming a coach for Special Olympics B.C.

“There is an opportunity for everyone to help out, even if you only have a couple hours a week, or are looking for project-based jobs,” Brinkman said, adding “The need is great.”

People who can’t attend the Vernon Volunteer Fair but still wish to get involved with local non-profits, can find more information at the Volunteer Vernon website.
