The City of Vernon has a new department director.

Terry Barton has been hired to lead community infrastructure and development services.

A release from the city stated Barton spent the past 20 years in local government management with the City of Kelowna. During that time he served several different roles in multiple departments, including as the manager of development planning where he served as lead planner and was responsible for sustainable growth of the community.

Barton also served as the parks and buildings planning manager where he was responsible for the vision, planning and implementation of the park network and civic building portfolio. While in that role he oversaw the Bernard Avenue Streetscape Project, which transformed the road into a public space, and he led the delivery of the new RCMP headquarters in Kelowna.

He also spent over a decade in charge of the parkland acquisition strategy and oversaw the development of new parks and public spaces.

Barton holds a Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) specializing in strategic planning from the University of Victoria, as well as a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Guelph.

Born in Quebec and raised in Toronto, Barton currently lives in Kelowna with his family and three young children.

He worked in Boston, Massachusetts, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Vancouver, prior to landing his job in Kelowna.

Barton was introduced to Vernon council at a recent meeting.

“It’s an honour to be with your great community. I’m really happy to be here and I really look forward to working with [mayor and council] and the community at large on the very important matter of making the City of Vernon better,” Barton said to council.

“So if I can be at all of any help in that, I would be honoured to be a part of your future.”
