The B.C. Wildfire Service continues to action a wildfire east of Enderby, though fire activity has been slowing down.

The Shuswap River wildfire, located north of the Shuswap River Islands Park, was discovered on July 21.

“It’s still currently classified as Out of Control but there hasn’t been any growth in a couple of days,” Taylor Colman, a fire information officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service told Vernon Matters Thursday, August 3.

“Right now with the current conditions, temperatures are a little bit cooler in the evening and into the morning, so the fire behaviour is about Rank 1 or Rank 2 and more on the ground and not too much up into the branches of the trees and slower rates of spread,” Colman said.

“During the day when temperatures increase and we get some wind on site we do see an increase in fire behaviour, but tat this point it’s been pretty steady so far.”

As of Thursday morning the fire was an estimated 21.9 hectares in size, which is the same size it has been for the past several days.

The BCWS had one firefighter team consisting of 27 members assigned to the blaze.

Colman said they were actioning the fire where possible, though added a lot of the terrain in the area is steep and inaccessible.

The BCWS also had one helicopter, two pieces of heavy equipment and two water tankers assigned to the Shuswap River wildfire as of Thursday morning .

The BCWS suspects the fire was started by a lightning strike.
