Two years after preliminary approval was given, a proposal for a new campground along Swan Lake goes before the Regional District of North Okanagan board for final approval today.

RDNO directors passed first reading to rezone a site on Swan Lake at 7850 Redwing Road in Electoral Area “B” from country residential to recreation commercial back in April 2021.

The developer of the proposed 40-site campground had to meet several conditions before final approval would be considered. The 2.3 hectare site would also include a pool, washrooms, maintenance building, residential single family dwelling, and recreation area.

The applicant has offered to provide a six metre-wide statutory right of way for a public trail along Swan Lake from Redwing Road to the southern property boundary.

The proposed development would be accessed from Redwing Road and would be serviced by Greater Vernon Water and the future community sewer system at Swan Lake.

RDNO staff said the official community plan and zoning amendment bylaws received third reading on October 20, 2021 and the applicant has since satisfied the conditions of adoption, and it is recommended the RDNO board approve the bylaws.

Other conditions of the approval were for consultation with First Nations, approval from CP Rail for a rail crossing, and the applicant providing an environmentally sensitive landscape maintenance plan which does not include the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

The staff recommendation will be discussed by RDNO board members at their meeting July 19.
