Council approves permit for new rental housing development

Vernon council has approved a development variance permit to allow a new rental housing development to move forward.

The applicant is proposing a 141-unit multi-family housing complex at 5975 LeFoy Road in the city’s north-east area.

Council approved the permit for expanded frontage and reduced loading spaces after receiving no written or in-person submissions.

The zoning calls for six loading spots and the applicant requested three.

The applicant sought a variance to 98 metres for the frontage, which is normally limited to 40 metres in this situation.

The proponent said the change was needed in order to allow the construction of two buildings with 141 rental units. The available building site on the property is constrained by the required riparian setback from BX Creek to the west and a future access road to be constructed.

City staff said the proposed design respected the riparian area as established, and provided adequate parking.
