Sunflower Festival to be held a month later

Jul 12, 2023 | 7:30 AM

The Bloom Sunflower Festival in Spallumcheen will take place a month later than normal.

The third annual event will be held Sept. 21 to Oct. 1 at the Szarek farm at 5050 Knob Hill Road, a five minute drive north of Armstrong.

Details and ticket info are available at bloomflowerfestivals.com.

A heat wave back in May forced the Bloom Tulip Festival at the same site to end two weeks earlier than planned, and the weather was one reason the latest event was pushed back.

“We wanted to give families a chance to enjoy the sunflowers in the fall, when the weather is just a little cooler for people and after the business of back to school,” Alexis Szarek, founder of Bloom Flower Festivals, explained.

The local festival kicked off in August its first two years.

Alexis and her husband, Marc, are busy planting more than 200,000 sunflower seeds of nearly 20 varieties this week, ranging from the golden yellow many know and love to those that take guests by surprise: dark, chocolate reds, dwarf whites and strawberry lemonade.

The 2023 Sunflower Festival also features a Sunflowers & Cider event for 19+ ticket-holders that will feature Farmstrong Cider and a charcuterie cup from Wedge Cheesery on Friday and Saturday nights; and a Residents Night Sept. 25 for those who live in the Township of Spallumcheen or the City of Armstrong to attend by bringing a food bank donation.
