Show your national pride: Canada Day events around North Okanagan

Jul 1, 2023 | 8:00 AM

There will be something for everyone in communities around the North Okanagan to celebrate Canada Day.

Activities on Saturday will mark the country’s 156th birthday since confederation.

Canada Day in Vernon:

Vernon’s event will be in Polson Park starting at at 10 a.m and continuing until 9 p.m.

Mayla Janzen, president of the North Okanagan Canada Day Society, said they have been working hard and are excited for a great day in the park on July 1.

“There will be a wide variety of activities for all ages, including the spray park/dunk tank, bouncy castle/slide and skate competition. Fruit Fest is returning. We’re giving away $1000 worth of local fruit for folks to snack on” Janzen told Vernon Matters.

Janzen said some community organizations are coming out to engage with people, like Tommy Gun’s which will be providing hair tattoos for free.

“There will also be a whole day of performances and local music, ramping up into the evening, and featuring Sidney Bos, Cat Wells, the Crashlanders and The Carbons.”

Janzen was asked if there will be any changes from last year when thousands of people came out.

“Last year was our group’s first year organizing the celebration, so we’re taking that and building on it. One of my favourite new additions is the shuttle running around the park to help make sure folks can get across the park easily, take advantage of the large availability of overflow parking, and hopefully help with accessibility for young and old alike.”

The theme for the Vernon event will be Celebrating our Community.

“The folks in our society love living in Vernon. It’s a beautiful place with lots going on. We just want to help increase the availability of arts and culture like promoting our live music, visual artists, food aficionados and giving a venue for folks to come out and have a great time close to home,” Janzen remarked.

The Vernon celebration also serves as the Canada Day event for other Greater Vernon communities in Coldstream and RDNO electoral areas B and C.

There will not be fireworks in Vernon this year due to the dry conditions and fire danger.
