Vernon city staff is suggesting some foliage clearing is needed following a fire at Vernon’s first post office.

A fire was set at the Luc Girouard cabin across from the Schubert Centre on 31st Ave. on the morning of June 7.

Fire crews quickly arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze, which appeared to intentionally set on the window sill at the rear of the building.

The fire caused superficial scorch damage to the rear wall facing Vernon Creek.

A staff report to Vernon city council said a site assessment has been completed and it was determined there is not a significant fire risk from the surrounding area and there are few FireSmart options.

However, it did suggest trimming some trees to prevent a build up of fallen leaves. It also stated the site could be made less attractive for loitering by undertaking a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design review.

Council will receive the information on the fire and the assessment at its regular meeting Monday, June 26.
