Kelowna will be adding to the ranks of sheriffs at its courthouse.

New sheriff recruits have recently completed an 11-week academic, physical and practical training program at the Justice Institute of B.C. and are ready to start their careers.

A total of 10 new sheriffs are going to work in Kelowna, Prince George and the Lower Mainland, though it was not disclosed how many will go to each community.

“These new sheriffs will play an important role in ensuring the safety of the communities they serve,” Jenny Manton, assistant deputy minister and director of sheriffs, said.

“They will help to make sure courts continue to be a safe and accessible place for everyone.”

B.C. Sheriff Services (BCSS) provide security at the 89 court locations throughout the province. They also transport accused and convicted people to correctional facilities, carry out court orders, administer juries and plan for high-security trials.

“People in B.C. rely on the critical role that sheriffs do in keeping our courts safe and accessible,” Paul Corrado, chief sheriff and executive director, BC Sheriff Service, said.

“We are proud to welcome these 10 new deputy sheriffs who will soon be making a difference in our communities.”
