Minimum wage rises June 1 in B.C.

People making minium wage will get a bigger pay cheque as of Thursday.

The province’s general minimum wage goes up by $1.10 — from $15.65 to $16.75 an hour — on June 1.

The 6.9 per cent jump also applies to minimum-wage rates for resident caretakers, live-in home-support workers and live-in camp leaders.

The government said the hike will impact about 150,000 workers who currently earn less than $16.75 per hour.

On Jan. 1, 2024, piece rates for the hand-harvesting of the 15 crops specified in the Employment Standards Regulation will increase by the same percentage.

B.C. currently has the highest minimum wage among the provinces, and trailing only Yukon ($16.77 per hour) and Nunavut ($16.00) in Canada.

The B.C. government says most jurisdictions in Canada are increasing their minimum wage this year, except Alberta and Nunavut.

The federal government announced an increase to the minimum wage for federally regulated employees from $15.55 to $16.65 as of April 1, 2023.
