Streamflow Advisory Lifted

Flood risk receding in the Shuswap

The risk of flooding events in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District has decreased.

The high streamflow advisory for the Shuswap region and its tributaries, including the Thompson, Shuswap, Salmon, Adams and Eagle Rivers, was rescinded Monday, May 29.

The CSRD stated monitoring stations on the Shuswap and Salmon Rivers show water levels are declining with no additional risk of rising water levels expected.

The level of Shuswap Lake as of Monday afternoon was 348.49 metres, and with sunny skies and no precipitation in the forecast, the Shuswap Emergency Program is not anticipating any flooding.

The CSRD added some local snowpacks have almost completely melted, while others in the eastern end of the watershed had roughly half their snowpack remaining.

Some rivers in the area still have fast flowing water and high levels, and people are reminded to be safe around rivers by staying back from the banks. People with pets and small children are also advised to keep a close eye on them.

Boaters are also reminded the runoff has resulted in lots of debris making it into the lakes, and the CSRD advises people to slow down and be cautious when on the water to avoid collisions with logs and branches.
