4% of Waste in Landfill

Reminder, cardboard isn’t garbage: RDNO

May 24, 2023 | 6:00 PM

The Regional District of North Okanagan is reminding people to properly dispose of their cardboard.

A waste composition study of the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility in 2021 and 2022 found cardboard was one of the most frequently found items in the garbage and accounted for four per cent of total waste disposed.

The RDNO stated that amounts to millions of kilograms of material annually that could easily be recycled instead winding up in the landfill.

Multi-family residences and businesses can dispose of cardboard in mixed-recyclables bins, while single family homes can recycle their cardboard as part of the Recycle B.C. curbside collection program.

People are reminded to flatten cardboard before disposing of it so it takes up less space, is easier to handle, and does not end up mixed with other materials like packaging foam or plastic products that increases contamination and reduces the potential for it to be recycled.

Cardboard with food residue on it can be composed, either through curbside food scraps collection, commercial compost bins, or a residence’s own compost bin. Though the RDNO does not plastic line paper, tape or other plastic should be kept out of compost bins.

Businesses and multi-family dwellings in need of recycling collection services are advised to contact a waste hauler for service.
