North Okanagan highway to be resurfaced

May 16, 2023 | 3:45 PM

The B.C. government is upgrading 485 kilometres of highways and sidewalks in the Southern Interior over the summer, with some of that work happening locally.

The province announced 14 kilometres of Highway 97A between Swan Lake and Armstrong will be resurfaced with hot-in-place recycled asphalt.

“Maintaining high-quality roads is critical to maintaining connections for people, especially people living in more remote areas,” Rob Fleming, minister of transportation and infrastructure, said.

“The improvements we’re making across the region are going to make travel safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

The local highway work is one of more than a dozen projects planned for the Southern Interior, for which the province has budgeted a total of $120 million.

The other projects include:

  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 1, Spences Bridge to Venables Valley Rd.
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 95, Canal Flats to Windermere
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 97C, Aspen Grove to the brake check
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 97, Plett Rd. to Ewing Rd.
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 5, Birch Island to Mad River
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 97C, Silver Creek to the Pennask brake check

  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 97, U.S. border to the Highway 3 junction
  • Conventional resurfacing on Highway 3A, Kootenay Lake Bridge to Balfour
  • Conventional resurfacing of Highway 1, Valleyview to Kokanee Way
  • Conventional resurfacing of Highway 5, Inks Lake Hill (southbound lanes) to Shuswap Rd.
  • Repaving Canim-Hendrix Lake Rd.
  • Repaving Canim Lake South Rd.
  • Repaving Horse Lake Rd and other side roads south of 100 Mile House
  • Hot-in-place recycled asphalt resurfacing on Highway 5, Merritt to Helmer
  • Graded aggregate seal coat resurfacing on Wardner Area and St. Mary’s Lake Road
  • Graded aggregate seal coat resurfacing on Highway 6, West Kettle Forest Service Rd. to the brake check

The start dates for these projects were not disclosed, but the province did say they were all expected to be complete by Sept. 29.

Motorists are reminded to observe construction zone speed limits, be cautious of workers, and follow all traffic control measures.

Updates on delays and closures caused by the work will be available at the DriveBC website.
