Hike for hospice heads for new heights

May 8, 2023 | 6:00 AM

There will be a new location for the annual “Hike for Hospice” fundraiser.

The event was brought back last year at Polson Park, after being on hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The North Okanagan Hospice Society has partnered with Silver Star Mountain this year and is encouraging hikers’, bikers, and strollers of all ages and abilities, to collect pledges and come out for the fun, community event on June 25. The resort boasts 16 kilometers of trails for every level of participant.

“Getting outside and exercising is great for the mind and soul. We’re proud to be chosen as the host venue for this year’s Hike for Hospice,” Silver Star Mountain Resort’s local sales manager Ginny Scott said.

The hike will take place on the resort’s summer season opening weekend and there will be different trails to choose from depending on your abilities and whether you are walking or biking. The distance will be dependent on your preference and whether you are on wheels or not. The crowd will enjoy opening remarks from special guest speakers, and a fun warm-up prior to starting the circle routes.

“NOHS is very excited to partner with Silver Star Mountain Resort for this years Hike for Hospice,” Lisa Matthews, executive director, NOHS, said. “The setting is spectacular and there are trails for every level of ability. We have added a corporate challenge, and trophies for the best costumes for teams and pets. It promises to be a lot of fun and provide important fundraising for hospice programs.”

There will be refreshments and entertainment before and following the walk at Silver Star along with the following competitions to win prizes:

Corporate Challenge: Get you and your colleagues together and raise funds as a team.

The top fundraisers will get a trophy.

Best dressed team: Best dressed team will get a prize.

Best Dressed Pet: Best dressed pet will get a prize, so please bring your 4-legged friends along for the day.

We encourage you to form your team or register individually and then hike/walk/bike/stroll or roll wherever and whenever you like to participate! You can even participate virtually! If you are unable to join us for the fun, please consider supporting another team or by providing a donation directly to NOHS.

Bannister GM and Cypress Funeral and Cremations are also sponsors. Additional sponsorships for the event are still available.

The ‘Hike for Hospice’ is a unique national fundraising event across Canada that brings together organizations working in hospice palliative care to raise funds and awareness in their community. Each year, thousands of hikers, bikers, runners and walkers will participate in events put on by their local hospice palliative care organizations. All funds raised during the Hike for Hospice stay within the community in which they were raised.
