More affordable homes open in Vernon

Vernon now has 25 more rental units of affordable housing after the recent openings of two new buildings.

One at 6335 Okanagan Landing Road with 13 units, was unveiled last week, while another at 4005 Pleasant Valley Road, called the Village at Pleasant Valley, is offering 12 townhouse-style homes for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes.

“These two new buildings will help a wide range of people in Vernon – from seniors on fixed incomes to growing families and people living with disabilities – find a good, affordable home,” Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, said. “Thank you to the Okanagan Village Housing Society for working with us to deliver these much-needed homes.”

Both are owned and operated by the non-profit Okanagan Village Housing Society (OVHS).

“Working in affordable housing provides me with daily experience of the number of people who are in crisis due to the housing shortage in our community,” Cindy Masters, executive director of OVHS said. “This project is a wonderful collaboration with the society, BC Housing, City of Vernon and financial support from the federal government.”

Residents started moving into their new homes on April 1.
