Near record low precipitation in Vernon

Vernon had only a quarter of it’s average precipitation in March, making it one of the driest on record.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Twitter account ECCC Weather British Columbia stated on social media Monday, April 3, that March saw a total of 6.3 millimetres of precipitation in Vernon.

That accounts for just 25 per cent of the average 25.4 mm.

The agency noted that is the fourth driest March on record since data collection began in 1903.

Of the 23 locations listed by Environment Canada, Kamloops was the driest in B.C. with just 0.5 mm of precipitation, followed by Penticton (1.8 mm) and Kelowna (4.5 mm).

Sandspit in Haida Gwaii was the wettest place in B.C. this past March with 86.9 mm of precipitation, followed by Campbell River (69 mm) and Abbotsford (55.3 mm).

Additionally, Environment Canada reported the mean temperature for Vernon was 3.6 degrees Celsius in March.

That is relatively in line with the normal mean temperature of 3.9°C for the month in question.

Victoria had the warmest month with a mean temperature of 7.1°C, followed by Abbotsford (6.6°C) and Vancouver (6°C).

Fort Nelson and Dease Lake had the coolest March, both with mean temperatures of -7.8°C, followed by Fort St. John (-7.6°C) and Chetwynd (-5.4°C).
