Okanagan snow levels higher than normal

Feb 9, 2023 | 3:30 PM

The Okanagan is bucking the trend when it comes to snow pack levels in British Columbia.

The River Forecast Centre reports the province had below normal snow pack as of Feb. 1, 2023, with the average of all snow measurements at 79 per cent (21 per cent below normal), decreasing from 82 percent of normal on Jan. 1.

The snow basin indices range from a low of 50 per cent of normal in the Skagit, to a high of 121 percent in the Okanagan. The Okanagan’s reading was down from 125 per cent of normal on Jan. 3, 2023.

Above normal snow was also measured within the Lower Thompson (115 per cent) and Boundary (116 per cent) basins.

Below normal snow basin indices are an early indicator for potential spring or summer drought concerns for some regions, while higher than normal can brig the potential for spring flooding.

The centre says by Feb. 1, nearly two-thirds of the seasonal snow pack has accumulated, on average.
