Vernon restaurant sold as owners focus on family

The popular Vernon restaurant Eatology is under new ownership as of today.

Former owners Krista and Joey Klein sold the restaurant in downtown Vernon as the pair have welcomed their first child into the world.

“[We’re] just focusing more on family. I just had a baby four months ago so it’s been a bit challenging running the business, having the baby,” Krista Klein told Vernon Matters.

“So yeah, just focus more on family and I think it’s just my time to move on. I put my time in and Eatology is at a really good place right now so I feel like it’s a good time to sell.”

The Kleins sold the business to two former employees, Merry Goddard and Sarah Cripps, who will reportedly keep the restaurant going, but with some modifications.

“It’s going to stay as Eatology, but I think they’re going to put their own twists on things and their own special touch on the place,” Klein said.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure what their plan is, but it will stay as Eatology with their personal touches.”

The sale was set to be finalized at 12 p.m. today (Jan. 23). Klein would not disclose the sale price to Vernon Matters.

The Kleins have owned and operated the business for several years, with the eighth anniversary set for April 13, 2023. She added there are a lot of positives to look back on over the past several years as owner.

“A big highlight has been getting to know a lot of people in Vernon. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people that have been our regulars and I call them my friends. Just getting to know my staff, building relationships with staff. I’ve learned so much in the last seven and a half years, it’s been crazy how much I’ve learned and grown as a person” Klein told Vernon Matters.

“And it’s just been so much fun being creative in the kitchen and show my creations to Vernon, my community. There’s just been so much good that’s come out of this and it’s just my time to move on and be a full time mom for a while.”

The Kleins still own the building that houses Eatology, which is the former Greyhound bus station, and Krista said while they won’t have a hand in the business, they will visit the restaurant as customers.

Though the focus for the Kleins is family life for the next few years, they do plan to start working again at some point.

“I plan to start another business at some time in the future, because I am an entrepreneur, but I’m not sure what that will be or what that will look like,” Klein said.

“My husband (Joey) is starting a home inspecting business and I will help him with that, but I definitely will start my own business at some point, probably in a few years.”

Klein also wanted to express her gratitude to all the patrons who supported Eatology over the past several years.

“I couldn’t have done it without [the patrons] and I look forward to seeing all of the customers in here when I’m eating and not bussing tables. Maybe I can have a coffee with them and sit down,” Klein remarked.

“We wish the new owners the best of luck. We are so happy that they have taken over and we know they are going to do an amazing job and carry on the name of Eatology with good quality food and a creative menu.”
