UPDATE: Jan. 15, 2023

Silver Star Mountain Resort continues to report challenging conditions due to the weather.

The resort said on Facebook Saturday they received 25 cm of wet, heavy snow in the last 48 hours.

“It is creating challenging conditions. We want to thank you for your understanding as we work to address these issues to keep everyone safe,” the posting said.

“The mild temperatures and heavy snow load on the tree tops has caused hundreds of trees to snap or fall over completely, some onto power lines. This has created numerous unmarked hazards throughout our 3,282 acres of skiable terrain.”

The resort said despite the challenging and unprecedented circumstances, their staff was able to assess, clear, and safely open the Comet Chair and Gondola terrain on Saturday morning.

Following that, the crews focused on clearing the terrain accessed by the Alpine Meadows chair, which opened Saturday afternoon.

Other operational updates to note:
– Night skiing was limited to the Silver Queen chair Saturday due to downed power lines.
– Putnam Creek (the backside) was closed Saturday and will stay that way today due to unstable snow conditions and other safety hazards.
– Brewers Pond and Mini Sleds remain closed due to mild temperatures.

“We will continue to provide real-time updates on our story and website as they come. Due to the unpredictable nature of this scenario, we ask guests to be prepared for delays and/or full day closures for certain lifts tomorrow (Sunday),” the resort stated.

SilverStar Mountain Resort is having to take precautions due to weather-related hazards.

“Friday the 13th has certainly delivered some ‘unlucky’ conditions here at SilverStar,” a posting from the resort said on Facebook.

Staff say recent heavy, wet snow has caused trees to bend and collapse, causing significant hazards.

“The conditions have also created avalanche hazards on steeper terrain, and we’re seeing mixed precipitation at lower elevations,” the resort added.

After assessing the hazards — and with safety in mind — the following operations are impacted:

  • Putnam Creek will be closed all day
  • Alpine Meadows and its terrain is closed until further notice
  • Brewer’s Pond is delayed opening, possibly won’t open due to warm temperatures
  • Little Dipper Terrain Park is closed all day (park crew is doing a full rebuild)
  • Main Terrain Park is closed all day due to heavy snow

The resort’s patrol has recommended skiers and boarders stay on groomed trails today due to the conditions, and added the runs that are remaining open are safe.

“The safety of our guests is our top priority and takes time to assess. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we manage these ‘unlucky’ conditions,” the resort stated.
