Flights cancelled to Mazatlan due to drug violence

Jan 6, 2023 | 4:15 PM

Sunwing Vacations and WestJet have cancelled flights from Western Canada to Mazatlan, Mexico, after the arrest of a major alleged drug cartel leader led to violence in the streets.

The federal government issued a travel advisory, warning Canadians to exercise a “high degree of caution” in the tourist destination and three other regions after the son of jailed drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was captured by police Thursday.

Sunwing said it cancelled all departures to Mazatlan today (Jan. 6) from Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg out of an abundance of caution and impacted customers will receive a full refund.

WestJet tells CTV News that it’s monitoring the civil unrest in Sinaloa State “closely” and cancelled a flight to Mazatlan from Vancouver today as well as a return flight to B-C.
