A Vernon business has received support from city council to add more than a dozen new signs to its building.

Butcher Boys Grocery Store on Pleasant Valley Road was approved for a development variance permit to increase the area of its fascia signs from 28m2 to 68.8m2.

The new signs include 11 fronting Silver Star Road, five fronting Pleasant Valley Road and two fronting the parking lot.

Tamsen White, a store manager, told Vernon Matters, they are looking to fill in some of the space on the outside of their building.

“We’re going to be showing our offerings (cuts of meat, produce, etc.) with some classy pictures and frames on the Pleasant Valley Road side,” White explained. “And on the Silver Star Road side, we’ll be showcasing some historical photos both from our personal Butcher Boys collection that goes three generations deep as well as using the Vernon Museum as a resource.”

White said the historical photos will include a photo of her grandfather, Pete Guidi, when he and two others opened the original Butcher Boys location which was 61 years ago in downtown Vernon

Another photo will show an old sign when the business was known as “The Butcher Boys.”

White is not sure when the new signs will be up on their building, but she is excited for it to happen.

Matt Horsley with Visceral Communications, a Vernon resident who lives near the store, will design the signs.

“Butcher Boys is kind of a special…you don’t have that type of store around anymore and I’m really glad that I live so close to it, and it’s just a really great place and great people,” Horsley told Vernon Matters.

According to a report to Vernon council, city administration supported the variance request to increase sign area for the following reasons:

  • The existing building consists of large relatively blank walls. Additional colorful signage would improve the aesthetics of the building.
  • The proposed signage would highlight the history of Butcher Boys, local farms and orchards, and local fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, etc.
  • A building with 14m of frontage along two streets would be allowed to have the same size sign area as the Butcher Boys building, which is substantially larger (approximately 52m by 53m). lt seems logical that a much larger building could be afforded additional sign area. The size and scale of the proposed signage is appropriate for the size of the existing building
