Two Sightings

Cougar sighted near Okanagan Rail Trail

Nov 25, 2022 | 12:45 PM

Two cougar sightings were reported near the Okanagan Rail Trail this week

According to the Wildlife Alert Reporting Program, the first report was made at 5:08 p.m. Wednesday on Kalamalka Lakeview Drive in Coldstream.

Then, at 5:27 p.m. the same day, the second report came in saying the animal was sighted on KickWillie Loop Rd., east of the Dusty Spokes Bed and Breakfast.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said they received a report that two women were being followed by a cougar on the trail in that area, which eventually resulted in the women entering Kalamalka Lake to try and get away from the animal.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has not responded to a request for comment from Vernon Matters as of time of publication.

Wildsafe B.C. stated that cougar attacks on humans are rare, though they may view children or small pets as potential prey.

People are advised to stay in groups when in cougar habitats, keep dogs on leash, make noise when on trails, and consider carrying bear spray.

If someone does come in contact with a cougar, they are advised to slowly back away without turning their back to the animal, to make themselves look large as possible, and try to keep calm and avoid sudden movements.

Sightings of cougars and other wild animals should be reported to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
