RCMP investigating fire at business owned by new mayor of Kamloops

Oct 20, 2022 | 11:40 AM

Kamloops RCMP are looking for witnesses and video following a vehicle fire at a downtown business owned by the newly-elected mayor of the city.

In a news release, RCMP say officers and Kamloops Fire Rescue were called to the 200-block of Victoria Street West at around 6:30 a.m. Oct. 19 where an SUV was fully engulfed in flames.

The business has been identified as TRU Market Auto Sales, owned by Kamloops mayor-elect Reid Hamer-Jackson.

“Police have located and spoke with one person observed in the area at the time of the blaze,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said. “Officers are currently reviewing security footage to see if they can confirm and identify the presence of two other people who were also allegedly in the area and may have information relevant to the investigation. In the meantime, we are releasing an image of the vehicle in case anyone witnessed or captured dash camera footage of it before or during the blaze.”

Hamer-Jackson said the SUV that burned has previously been broken into for use as a shelter, and he’s concerned his building may be next.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with video or information related to the vehicle fire is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP.
