Water Infrastructure Upgrades

Duteau Creek work could affect water quality, allowable uses

Sep 16, 2022 | 5:45 PM

Greater Vernon Water is issuing a precautionary water quality advisory for the Duteau Creek water source.

The precautionary advisory, which will remain in effect from Sept. 16 to Jan. 31, was issued as a large infrastructure project is beginning at the source.

The work involves increasing the size of the spillway at Headgates Dam to protect infrastructure, the environment and downstream properties.

GVW stated the UV treatment may be intermittently affected throughout the construction period. While water may not be treated with UV, it will still undergo the clarification process and disinfected with chlorine.

Additionally, a lower level of water flow must be maintained in order to complete the work.

To adjust for the low level, GVW will also deliver water to some area customers using the Kalamalke Lake water source.

As there will be lower levels in the Duteau Creek Water Source, GVW is implementing Stage 2 Water Restrictions for all customers until further notice.

The properties impacted by this work are shown in green and blue in the below map.
