Cops for Kids riders roll into Vernon Saturday

Sep 16, 2022 | 1:45 PM

The police officers and emergency responder personnel taking part in the Cops for Kids ride will arrive in Vernon Saturday afternoon.

The 32 riders, including five members of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, are taking part in a 10-day ride throughout the Southern Interior to support local children suffering mental, physical, and traumatic crises.

The stop in Vernon is scheduled for outside the RCMP detachment at 3 o’clock Saturday, Sept. 17.

The local riders include Denise McMahon, Nick Reimann, Joel Kooger, Jonathan Klassen and Kathryn Ahvenus.

The riders left Kelowna Friday, Sept. 9, and have since ridden through Penticton, Osoyoos, Rossland, Nelson, Cranbrook, Golden, Revelstoke, and Salmon Arm, as well as several small communities in between each of the major stops.

They are set to arrive in Kamloops Friday, Sept. 16.

At each community, the riders stop and meet the children they are supporting and their families, as well as members of the public.

The riders will have a similar reception when they arrive in Vernon Saturday.

The riders have each committed to raising $2,500 in order to participate in the ride.

Ahvenus, Kooger, and Reimann have all reached the minimum fundraising requirement. As of time of publication, McMahon was still nearly $300 under her goal with four months left to raise the money. Additionally, Klassen has raised the minimum requirement but has also set his fundraising goal at $5,000, which he is currently short by nearly $900.

The five local riders have raised a combined $28,360.05 thus far.

Since its launch in 2001, the Cops for Kids Charitable Foundation has raised over $6.1-million to support children and youth in the Interior.
