Shatzko secures second term as RDNO Director

Amanda Shatzko will serve her second term as director for Area C BX/Silver Star after securing her seat by acclamation.

Speaking with Vernon Matters, Shatzko said being the sole candidate for the director position in the Regional District of North Okanagan is very different from her run in 2018 when she secured her first term in an election.

“But at the same time, I guess being acclaimed is a good thing for myself in regards to now that I know I can start right away on continuing some of those projects that we’re working on in my area,” said Shatzko.

“Elections are always fun to do, campaigns, for myself coming from a communications background I do enjoy a good campaign, but I guess this is what was in my cards this time.”

She said her top priority when reclaiming her seat will be developing stronger connections with neighbouring jurisdictions.

“We have a lot of shared services for our citizens,” said Shatzko, adding that completing some big projects are also a focus for next term.

“In particular in Area C we’re working on our BX Ranch lands agricultural park. We just acquired that land not to long ago and our studies have just concluded so it’s great to be able to now work towards implementing part of those plans.”

She added that she also wants to see the ongoing sewer projects in the Swan Lake and Silver Star areas and the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre completed in the next term.

Shatzko also said her constituents have been asking for the RDNO to “do more than just the status quo” and will try to improve on that create some changes over the next four years that benefit the area residents.

Shatzko is one of four RDNO directors who have already secured their seats. The other acclaimed directors are incumbents Bob Fleming and Rick Fairbairn, as well as Jim Johnson, who served the RDNO prior to 2018.

“[The incumbents and I have] worked together over the past four years I think really well. We made a great team as Electoral Areas, we share a lot of services together and I’m looking forward to another term working with them again,” Shatzko told Vernon Matters.

“I am familiar with [Johnson] as well, he served on a few committees.”

The seat for Area F – Rural Enderby is the sole election race in the RDNO. Three newcomers, Lori Heins, Allysa Hopkins and Jerry Legault are all in the running for the seat.

Shatzko could not provide an official endorsement for any of the candidates, saying she is not familiar with anyone in the running, but did state that is ready to work with whoever is elected in that riding.
