A made-in-Vernon action film will hit the big screen next month.

Young Ronin will make its debut at The Towne Theatre with two showings on Oct. 14.

“It was completely filmed and produced here in Vernon,” Peter Kaz, one of the film’s three producers, said.

The movie is written and directed by Mitchell Vanlerberg, and produced by Kaz, Vanlerberg and David Scarlatescu.

The plotline involves a pair of teenage martial artists who are hired to kidnap a teenage celebrity to pay for their friend’s operation. However, they must choose between their friend or the celebrity when one begins to fall for her.

“In Hollywood, it costs millions of dollars and a team consisting of thousands of people to create an action film,” a news release for the film stated. “Mitchell Vanlerberg, David Scarlatescu and Peter Kaz challenge that approach by creating an independent action film using only the resources the Okanagan Valley has to offer.”

The production worked with Kees Tae Kwon Do to choreograph the action set pieces in the film.

“They used their knowledge of filmmaking to bring to life a full-feature action film, shot in Vernon and including local actors,” the news release said.

Young Ronin will be screened at the Vernon Towne Theatre on Oct. 14. Showtimes are at 6 and 8 p.m.

Admission price is $13 with more information at The Towne Theatre.
