Silver Star to benefit from fire resiliency funds

Sep 1, 2022 | 11:00 AM

A portion of provincial funding intended to reduce community wildfire risk will benefit Silver Star.

The province has allocated $25-million through the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C. (FESBC) to fund 22 new community projects, eight of which are within the Thompson-Okanagan region, including one at Silver Star.

The local investment will see $474,600 go to the Silver Star Property Owners Association to complete a combination of hand and mechanical wildfire risk-reduction treatment to reduce the wildfire risk along the main road in and out of SilverStar Mountain Resort.

“People across the Okanagan have first-hand experience with the disastrous affects of wildfires, and these investments will take important steps to protect people, communities and land,” said Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee.

“Not only will this keep our communities safe, but it will also help ensure that our backcountry areas are environmentally stable and resilient for generations to come.”

Including the Silver Star project, the Thompson-Okanagan area will see $3-million go to support projects that range from wildfire risk reduction treatments to developing prescriptions and treatment areas to fuel reduction work.

“FESBC is thrilled that communities will be able to continue this important work to reduce their wildfire risk to better protect their residents and important infrastructure,” said Steve Kozuki, executive director, FESBC.

“These newly funded projects take a proactive approach to reduce the risks of wildfire and many will also improve wildlife habitat, increase the health of forests so they are more resilient to climate change, and use the left-over wood waste to make green energy. Achieving multiple objectives is good forest management and good value for money.”

A total of $14-million from the provincial investment has already been allocated. Work on these projects has already begun and they are all expected to be complete by March 2024.

FESBC is accepting applications from communities that also wish to access some of the remaining funds to conduct wildfire risk reduction projects.
