One person was taken to hospital after a single vehicle crash on the highway south of Vernon Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a southbound car failed to negotiate a curve and struck the cement lane divider around 2:30 p.m.

“The vehicle then lost control and crossed into the ditch where it struck a rock wall and overturned,” said Constable Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

Mounties say the driver and lone occupant, a 36-year-old Lake Country woman, was transported to hospital by ambulance for assessment, with no word on what may have caused the crash.

The incident took place north of Bailey Road, which is the turn-off to Predator Ridge Resort.

Crash on highway south of Vernon
Aug 23, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Traffic on Highway 97 south of Vernon is slow going after what appears to have been a single vehicle crash.

Witnesses tell Vernon Matters a red car reportedly hit the centre median and went off the highway and into a rock face about 1 kilometre north of Bailey Road (Predator Ridge turnoff).

Police, ambulance and Fire-Rescue are at the scene.

Southbound traffic was getting through at last report, but perhaps not for long.

“I imagine once emergency services are on scene, it will take up both lanes of traffic. The car hit the rock face pretty hard, and there is a lot of damage,” said one motorist.

Vernon Matters has reached out to RCMP for details.
