Greater Vernon residents can now register for fall recreation programs, including new swimming courses.

As of Sunday morning, Vernon, Coldstream, and Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) Areas B and C residents can register for all fall programming and courses.

Residents outside those area will be able to register for programs starting at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28.

New this fall, Greater Vernon Recreation Services will offer swim lessons through the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program, which teaches swimming from parent and tot classes through to leadership courses.

“The Lifesaving Society’s mission is ‘to prevent drowning and reduce water-related injury,’” said Gary Lefebvre, Vernon’s aquatics manager.

“The Swim for Life program has a lot of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. The program also incorporates valuable Water Smart education that will last a lifetime.”

The Canadian Red Cross, the International Life Saving Federation and the Commonwealth Royal Life Saving Society have all endorsed the Swim for Life program.

More information on swimming lessons and other recreation activities and programs can be found at the city’s website.
