Greater Vernon Ringette puts out call for new members

Aug 16, 2022 | 3:00 PM

The Greater Vernon Ringette Association (GVRA) is looking for athletes of all ages to register for the upcoming 2022-2023 ringette season.

After an exciting and successful season last year that saw new and returning players compete across B.C., the GVRA is preparing for the upcoming season. Registration is underway with many returning players ready to get started.

The association said parents from last season raved about their kids having a great time building friendships, playing the sport, and travelling within B.C. to compete.

“Ringette in Vernon not only creates a chance for the athletes to get access to plenty of ice time, which is always competitive around here, but it allows for the development of key athletic skills, and they stay active over the winter season,” said the parent of a returning athlete, “In our ten years of being involved in the GVRA, we’ve seen the sport grow significantly.”

As the sport grows across Canada, more and more universities are now adding affiliated teams to their athletic programs, giving athletes an option to continue the sport after high school. This was not always an option in years past and has deterred athletes from playing and continuing the sport.

Today, more than two dozen universities host a ringette team in Canada including marquee names such as UBC, University of Calgary, University of Alberta, Laval, Queens, and more.

significant scholarships are also starting to become a reality giving athletes the chance to pursue their athletic aspirations while getting their education,” the association stated.

The GVRA said the sport that started in 1963 for girls who couldnt play hockey, now has nearly 30,000 registered players on nearly 2,000 teams. While it is primarily a female sport, there are currently over 700 males playing ringette across the Canada.
