The construction of Vernon’s new child care facilities are moving ahead, with one nearly ready to open.

Painting and the installation of interior finishes, including kitchen cupboards, classroom doors, sinks and storage cubbies, has been completed at the Lakers Child Care Facility in Okanagan Landing.

Crews are working outside the facility to complete the landscaping and set up fencing.

It’s expected that the Lakers facility will be nearly completely constructed in mid-August. The testing, commissioning and occupancy of the facility is expected to go in September.

Meanwhile, the work at the Recreation Complex Child Care Facility on 35th Avenue is ongoing.

The exterior finishes of the building, landscape sloping and installation of curbs and sidewalks has been completed at the site.

Work continues to finish the drywall in some classrooms, and the painting of those rooms is expected to be continue through August.

The flooring and final finishing will take place in September.

The completion date of the Rec Complex facility was pushed back in July. As of August 15, it’s still expected to be completed by the end of September with the testing, commissioning and occupancy going in October.

Both projects remain on budget.

Once completed, the two facilities will create about 200 new licensed child care spaces for area children.
