Clipped rock starts fire in BX

A mower clipping a rock sparked a small grass fire in a field above Old Kamloops Road in the BX area of Greater Vernon Sunday afternoon.

BX Swan Lake fire chief Bill Wacey says the resident was able to guard the fire to prevent it spreading before fire crews arrived and doused it around 1:30 p.m.

“It wasn’t a huge one. It certainly had potential. The homeowner was pretty quick getting a guard around the uphill component of it, so when we got there, we were able to put it out,” Wacey told Vernon Matters.

Wacey said the B.C. Wildfire Service did send a crew to the scene, but they were not needed.

“We borrowed some water from them. That was about it.”

Wacey stated it’s fairly common to see fires start from rocks getting clipped by mowers when it’s extremely dry like now.

“They were cutting down some big thistles in the field and clipped-up some rocks that were in the deep grass,” Wacey explained.

The veteran fire chief says the disadvantage of the wet spring we had is that it has created more growth and fuel for potential fires.

“It was quite high and pretty dried out already,” Wacey added.
