Vernon’s public arts policy delayed due to other priorities

The City of Vernon still does not have a public visual arts policy to put in place.

The City’s Public Arts Advisory Committee was disbanded in 2009, resulting in the previous policy no longer being used.

Administration had planned to develop a new policy, but a report to city council says competing priorities have meant that the task was pushed aside and has not yet been completed.

The report stated that the purpose of a public visual arts policy is to ensure local artists and community members play a role in developing art projects and displays in Vernon. This in turn will benefit the city, as the report said visual art inspired pride in community members, has economic benefits related to tourism, and can bring people together as artists, contributors and viewers.

In order to achieve the goals of a public art policy, the report states that a Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) must be re-established.

That will be a voluntary committee of Vernon residents who have backgrounds in architecture and landscaping, art, urban design, and other related fields. A city staff member will also be assigned to the committee.

PAAC will be responsible for reviewing proposed art projects, advising council on potential displays, seeking out grant and sponsor opportunities, and engaging the public on proposed projects.

Vernon council is expected to receive the report for information at its meeting on Monday, Aug.15. Staff will finish developing a Public Visual Arts Policy and bring it back to council for further discussion at a later date.
