Be Courteous To Other Road Users

E-scooters encouraged to share the road: City of Vernon

Aug 12, 2022 | 10:41 AM

The City of Vernon is reminding all road users to be respectful of others and share the road, especially scooter riders.

The city said e-scooters are permitted on Vernon’s transportation network and are a legal mode of transportation.

However, there are several regulations for using an e-scooter, including:

  • Riders must be 16 years or older;
  • Use roads and bike lines following the same rules as a cyclist;
  • No riding while impaired by alcohol or drugs;
  • No carrying any passengers/no double-riding;
  • Be considerate of other road users and travel at an appropriate speed;
  • Use front and rear lights when dark outside;
  • Ensure the device meets requirements set out in the Motor Vehicle Act.

Additionally, the city stated that e-scooters may be used on sidewalks and multi-use pathways, but the riders must slow down and yield to pedestrians. The scooters must also be dismounted when crossing a crosswalk.

Anyone involved in a collision involving an e-scooter that either directly or indirectly results in an injury must report the incident to the RCMP right away.

Neuron Mobility, who provide the Vernon’s e-scooter program, holds ScootSafe events regularly to educate riders and the general public on key safe guidelines, best riding practices and local rules for e-scooters. The next ScootSafe event is planned for Aug. 20 at the Downtown Vernon Association’s 2900 Plaza Day.

Anyone who attends a ScootSafe event can receive free credits for the Neuron app.

The city also advised all road users to review the rules of the road, which can be found online here, and to be courteous and share the road with others.
