The Vernon Vipers have hired a native of Czechia as an assistant coach.

Lukas Lomicky comes to Vernon after two seasons as an associate coach with the BC Hockey League’s Prince George Spruce Kings.

Vipers head coach and general manager, Jason McKee, calls Lomicky “a very talented, driven young coach.”

“He has years of experience coaching, especially in the last couple in the BCHL which will be a great benefit to our organization and players. Lukas has the ability to handle and exceed in a lot of different roles which is so important in junior hockey,” McKee said.

Lomicky began his coaching career with HC Sparta Praha U18 in 2012-13 as an assistant coach. He made the move to North America in 2017-18 as an assistant with the Revelstoke Grizzlies of the Kootenay International Junior League before becoming head coach in 2019-2020.

Lomicky said he is pleased to be joining the Vipers organization, which he says is one of the premier organizations in the BCHL.

“I’m thankful to Jason McKee, John and Tom Glen [owners ] for the opportunity. I am thrilled to be a part of Jason’s staff and have the chance to work with and learn from such a skilled and experienced group. I look forward to continuing the winning traditions and help bring a championship back to the Vipers organization and the City of Vernon.”

The Vipers have two other assistant coaches listed on their website: Colton Sparrow and Eric Morrissette.

The Vipers will start their training camp in early September with their first exhibition game Sept. 4 in Salmon Arm.
