Garbage collection calendar error remedied

Jul 13, 2022 | 11:43 AM

A printing error in the City of Vernon’s garbage collection calendar has been corrected.

The Curbside Waste Collection Guide, which was placed inside each organics cart with a kitchen catcher, had a misprint that made it seem like the pickup dates were changing starting in September.

“When we printed the Curbside Waste Collection Guide, we inadvertently reversed the dark and light-coloured boxes between August 31 and September 1,” said Christy Poirier, Manager of Communications and Grants for the City of Vernon.

“These coloured boxes represent the garbage collection day for each collection zone. Therefore, the reversal made it look like garbage collection schedules would change this fall. But they won’t. We apologize for the mistake.”

The misprint does not affect the organics collection which will continue to be done every week, and garbage collection will be done every second week based on the schedule sent out May 1.

Residents are advised to watch for the second quarter utility bill, which will be put in the mail in the coming days, as a corrected copy of the garbage collection calendar will be included with the bill.

A list of tips and reminders for the organics collection program will also be sent in the mail in the coming days.

A digital version of the corrected calendar, as well as the revised Curbside Waste Collection Guide, can also be found on the City’s website.

“We understand it’s taken some time for residents to learn the new program and waste collection schedule, so an error like this doesn’t help the process, but we appreciate everyone’s understanding,” said Poirier.

“We also appreciate residents’ fulsome participation in the new organics and garbage collection program. Together, we are making a significant positive impact for our community’s future by diverting waste from the landfill and taking steps to lead a more sustainable lifestyle in the North Okanagan.”
