Weekend food drive to support local food bank

Jul 12, 2022 | 9:30 AM

The Salvation Army’s House of Hope in Vernon will be collecting food this weekend to help people in need.

Community and Family Services Coordinator, Sandra Rowsell, told Vernon Matters there is a need to restock the shelves at the food bank, as they have seen an uptick of people accessing the service.

“We’ve had a lot more people come to access the food bank over the last few months, so our stock is kind of dwindling and that’s why we’re running this,” said Rowsell.

The Salvation Army will be set up at the Superstore in Vernon from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 17, to accept donations of all sorts of non-perishable foods.

“Canned tuna and salmon, items like that, cereal, peanut butter, the main staples like pasta and tomato sauce, canned soup, canned vegetables,” said Rowsell.

The House of Hope will also be accepting donations of toiletries such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo and soap, as well as infant products like diapers, formula and baby food.

Clothing donations are not needed at this time.

A Salvation Army kettle will also be on-site for people to make monetary donations in support of the food bank.

Rowsell could not say what the fundraising goal of the weekend food drive would be but did say that their truck would be on-site and they hope to fill it up with donations from the community.
